8cougar8 Walk-on
Just came from SLC Chapter Cougar Club with Coach Sitake

Coach Sitake did an awesome job today.  I have been to the SLC Cougar Club meetings every year since he took over and I can tell a difference today versus his first year.  To me he has matured and grown into the role of head coach.  He didn't discuss much on the X's and O's front this time.  He did spend most of his time discussing team philospophy.  I'll summarize his main points:

  • Best players play.  We've heard this but he expounded... the best player means not just in practice but in the weight room and in the classroom.  If those items aren't in line then they don't play.  It's a long term strategy to get the mindset of team.  Said it hurts morale if someone is screwing around in school or not working hard in the weight room and then plays on Saturday just because they have the most talent.  I hope I said this right... but I really liked the explanation.
  • He is trying to build the whole program is built around toughness.  Tough to get into BYU, tough to stay at BYU, football team is going to be physically tough and make that the identity.
  • He said that because of the tough admissions, honor code, etc, that the walk on program produces some real contributors to the program (said players with scholarship offers other places are choosing BYU, paying their own way... Bayor Romney, Dax Milne were two examples... he gave a few others I can't remember their names).  Said that walk ons are playing special teams and contributing this year.
  • He said that the recruiting rankings are not the end all... gave the example of the four corners that are playing now... Ellis, Mandel, and two others can't remember their names.  Said none had the star rankings but are playing really well and graded out better each progressive game this year.
