Stewart Mandel the lead college football writer at The Athletic has in his bowl
projections a 6-6 BYU team being left out.

He says there is a rule that when bowls choose backup teams, they cannot choose a 6-6 team if a 7-5 team is available.

So with so many bowl-eligible teams this year, is it possible BYU would be left out even if they finish 6-6?

I know some have said that ESPN has guaranteed they would find a spot for BYU, but I am guessing that means for available slots and that they would not break up a contract with an existing conference to bring in BYU. And even then ESPN would still have to let the 7-5 teams go in first before letting a 6-6 team be chosen.

The article is behind a paywall.
