She had a very normal childhood and was a wonderful person. As she aged and bipolar kicked in, she became a different person. She often understood that she was changing and was afraid of it, but her brain chemistry was "off-the-charts" extreme. The genetics were too tough to fight. After years of hand-to-hand combat with her personal demons, and after prolonged medical interventions, she finally gave in and took her own life. We were saddened beyond belief.
About a year after the fact, I spoke with my sister (her mother) about the loss... in her heart, she believes that a loving Father received her after a very personalized test of mortality. She had been a good, sweet girl before the genetics kicked in and altered her brain chemistry in her mid-late teens. In my sister's view, her daughter is finally at peace, having fought the good fight as best she could. I have no insight to prove her right or wrong, and I believe that life is a precious gift from God. That said, my sister deeply misses her pre-change daughter very much, but she's "glad" (wrong word choice, I know) that her daughter has been released from the demons that bound her tightly.
