Had ACL reconstruction a couple years ago.
After that surgery, there were several key signs that my orthopedic surgeon insisted were “normal, post-op” things:

- Severe pain in my calf when I stood. Felt like the entire leg below the knee was going to explode.

- Unexplained swelling that caused my PT to say at the end of my sessions that I will always be known as the guy with the strange swelling. I could never bend my knee as far as they wanted me to because of all the fluid in my calf and thigh.

- Unexplained numbness. Calf felt like it was wrapped in a couple layers of scotch tape. Full feeling never came back to the foot.

- Leg was very red with splotchy areas on my ankle and foot.

The ACL surgery was great. My knee has never felt better. But the surgeon’s refusal to simply order up a diagnostic doplar almost cost me my life. I went to my PCP, and a clinic at work who both told me they couldn’t override the ortho’s decision. Finally in July, I got a new primary care physician who is also one of the hospital administrators—so he only has office hours on Mon and Fri. He wasn’t afraid step on the ortho’s toes and immediately ordered up the doplar. Less than 10 minutes into the doplar, the tech left the room for 20 minutes—it was that bad.

This process would have been much easier if I had those two years back to treat this thing.
