Honestly, all of their songs sound the exact same, and nearly every one of them follow the exact same formula:
-One section (men or women) starts the song, softly
-Switch to other section halfway through first verse, then both sections sing first chorus on the melody
-Split into parts for the second verse and chorus, singing slightly louder now
-Organ duet plays a bridge, with a key change leading into the final chorus
-Final Chorus, sung extra loudly for effect. Words are barely distinguishable through the intense vibratto.
-Finish with a final "AMEN, AND AMEEEEEEEEN!" with a climactic, ultra-high soprano note, then cut into silence.
I mean really, this is the song structure of nearly every single MoTab (I guess it is technically TabCats now) song I have heard, conference or otherwise, and I really just don't understand the hype about its songs. They're certainly talented singers, but MoTab songs are indistinguishable from one another, and even the dynamic effects and patterns within each song are so overused that they have become hackneyed and meaningless.
I'm not sure who or what the problem is. I'm not a huge fan of choir music in general, which might explain some of my distaste. But as someone who sang in school and church choirs for years, I can for sure tell you that there is far more interesting choir music of much more diverse flavors than what is always sung by the TabCats. I just can't help but be bored and even somewhat annoyed at the always-vanilla stuff that TabCats produces, be it during or outside of conference.
Is this a sentiment that other people share or is it just me?
