Well we do pick and choose when to be strict about it.
Because for 99 yards of the field, spotting the ball is just up to the best efforts of the line judges, which I’ve always thought kinda funny. Sometimes they just seem to guess where to spot the ball.
But we can’t use replay for 98% of spots. But we can at the goal line and occasionally to find out if a first down was converted. Seems like a perfectly reasonable line to draw.
