A special request for the bowl game
It’s come to my attention that there are those among the BYU fan base who are not altogether pleased with our postseason destination. This attitude is, at times, reflected in the casual way in which we reference the game. “Heading up to the spud bowl,” they may say, or “In what universe does an outdoor December bowl in Boise make sense?”

Fellow Cbers, The name of the bowl game is the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. This is not merely a nickname, but is the name decreed by the corporate sponsors, The Idaho Potato Council and Farm Growers Association. The fact that the potatoes are, in fact, famous is also referenced in affiliated events, including the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Mash Bash.

May I make a humble, yet gentle, suggestion? When we were speaking of the bowl game, we should use the entire name of the bowl: the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Game. Should a friend not of our fanbase ask “So is BYU going bowling this year?” You might respond “Why yes! Kalani Sitake has led our boys to a 6-6 record, qualifying them for an invite to The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Game!” When a well-meaning colleague inquires “What’s up with that weird blue turf” you can reply “Why, that’s Albertson’s Field, home of The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl!”

As we approach this special time of year, let us make an increased effort to say the full name of the bowl: The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Game. To omit the full name of the bowl is a major victory for Kyle Wittingham.
