I really like the way Payton uses Taysom in the Saints offense.
And that includes liking how MUCH he is used. When Taysom-designed plays haven't worked great, fans have clamored for him to be used less. When the plays have worked well, fans have clamored for him to be used more.

But Payton's consistently sparing use of Taysom seems to provide a lot of benefit. Here are a few benefits:

1. The opponent has to take a lot of time out of their practice week to study and prepare for the unique Taysom designs. If they don't, they can get gashed by read-option and other big plays. So the opponent ends up spending a ton of time making sure they are ready for the wrinkles, even if the wrinkles never appear. So even though the last week's 3 or so plays didn't work that well, they are enough, and consistent enough, to cause the next opponent to sacrifice time and resources in prep for the next week. This is why there is value in running just a few read-option plays that don't produce much. It misdirects the next opponent.
2. By only designing a few Taysom plays each week, Payton can make the plays unique each week. That means that the opponent prep may not even matter that much.
3. By only having a few designed plays each week, Taysom stands to execute those plays much higher. The team can practice them a lot. Like the fake punt.
4. Taysom becomes a great decoy. Because he isn't always in, when he comes in he causes a lot of misdirection. He ends up doing a really good job blocking since the guys he is blocking are initially worried about him blowing past on a post route. I imagine the defense starts hollering as soon as Taysom comes in, and they start trying to guess how he is going to be used.

It is awesome. So next week Payton doesn't even have to use Taysom at all except to block (which he happens to be pretty good at) and it would still produce a ton of corollary benefit to the offense.
