Dieting is a funny thing. The easy answers are right in front of us
yet every year we come up with a new fad.

It is keto now. I guarantee it won't be keto in a few years. Not because keto doesn't work, but because fundamentally keto is extreme and as humans we burn out on extreme things over time. Just like we got bored with all the other extreme diets over the years. What do I mean by extreme? Don't eat fat. Don't eat sugar. Don't eat meat. Don't eat carbs. Fasting. Cleansing. Only eat what cavemen ate. Only eat what Meditteraneans eat.

Why are we so quick to walk away from the obvious diet that will work, which is more or less the food pyramid? I think it is OK to eat several times a day and not have to fast. I think it is OK to eat carbohydrates and it benefits us if we focus on non-processed stuff. I think it is OK to eat meat. Fat is OK in moderation. We should increase our veggies and just reduce our portion sizes. Everything has its place in moderation. It is obvious that if we are downing huge quantities of Coke, Cheetos, and fast food, we will put on weight quickly. If we replaced those things more often with water, an apple, a sandwich, and a small handful (not an entire bag) of chips we would be more healthy. It is just common sense and it doesn't require a fad diet.

That is the conclusion I have come to (and yes, I've done a few fad diets over the years). I am not perfect and I accept that I put on a few pounds over Christmas because I just at too much during the merry season. The answer is to eat a little less now and maybe eat half the piece of cake tonight and the other half tomorrow.

That isn't to say that some of you keto disciples aren't having wild success right now. But it isn't generally a sustainable lifestyle over a period of years. That is all.
