there is another benefit to owning a home which no one has mentioned yet.

there is a tax benefit currently ( until it gets changed) of being able to sell your personal residence if you live there for two of the previous five years and the entire gain up to $500,000 is tax-free. This is not limited to a single occurrence but may be used multiple times. No age requirement either like it was when some of us were younger.
