For the past 5 years Gonzaga's recruiting has been significantly better
than BYU's. I didn't go back any farther, but it's not really relevant to the point that was being made.
2020: Gonzaga 4th in country
2019: Gonzaga 6th in country
2018 Gonzaga 68th; BYU 118th
2017: Gonzaga 120th; BYU 170th
2016: Gonzaga 20th; BYU 36th
So in no way are Gonzaga's recruiting classes "about the same as BYUs."
Perhaps that was true at some point long ago--I don't know. But it's been a while since they recruited a class close to as poor as BYU's.
