This story will seem far-fetched to many of you, but I thought I'd share it anyway:
Several months ago I had the opportunity to chat with Holmoe about the state of the basketball program. I don't need to get into the details here, but I'm currently bedridden so he was generous enough to come to my home and visit me in my room. We had a great talk about many subjects, but my primary concern was the state of the basketball program. We both agreed that Coach Rose has done many great things, but we also agreed that things have been trending downward lately and that it's probably time for a change. Holmoe was reluctant to commit to any sort of timeline, but I kept pressing him. Things got a little awkward, but eventually he gave me a very peculiar assurance that he was going to take action soon.
"I'll tell you what," he finally said, pointing to a vine on the wall outside my window, "when the last leaf of that vine falls to the ground, I will fire Coach Rose."
I found this extremely strange, but Holmoe told me to hang in there and be patient and wait for the last leaf to fall. So that's what I've been doing. Waiting. And I can tell you all that we're getting very close! There is currently only one leaf left on the vine--all the others have already fallen. Come to think of it, it's very strange that the final leaf hasn't fallen yet (all the others fell off a long time ago), but I'm guessing it will fall any day now! I mean, it can't last much longer!
