Hero Ball vs. Team Ball. Baxter & Childs not getting enough touches--especially
in Crunch Time.

When BYU was up by 14 against San Francisco on Thursday, Hero Ball kicked in. Nick Emery took and missed a 25-foot forced three. Soon afterwards, Nick forced the ball up the court and made two turnovers leading directly to layups for San Francisco. As BYU squandered its 14-point lead, the ball was in TJ's hands on offense most of the time. Only when SF closed the lead down to six, did our guards think to try to get it into Childs. I can't recall that Baxter had an offensive field goal attempt the last eight minutes of the game.

Why couldn't TJ and Nick see that the best odds to keep the lead were to get the ball into the hands in scoring position of the two players who have the highest field goal percentages. Childs is shooting 52 % for the season and Baxter 65% (Baxter has shot over 70% the last six games). By the way, in the SF game, Childs was 11-17 and Baxter 3-4 from the field. Nick was 0-4 and TJ 6-14.

As the great philosopher, Dirty Harry Callahan, said: "A man's got to know his limitations." Nick and TJ don't know their limitations and don't know Childs' and Baxter's potential and abilities.
