a dependent?

I have 2 situations:

First son got married in August and we paid two semesters of tuition for him before he was married. Now he is filing a joint return with his wife. I'm using HR block tax software but when I try to claim the education credit for that tuition we paid, it won't let me because he is no longer filing as my dependent.

Second son is not married and supports himself. We helped him out with a semester of BYU tuition. We aren't claiming him as a dependent but is there a way for us to get credit for the tuition we paid for him?
