I will be doing an internship in the D.R. over the Summer, leaving in May and returning in August. It is through the USU Business School, and we will be teaching local business owners how to improve their businesses and also working with rescuees of Operation Underground Railroad and helping them start their own businesses. VERY EXCITED!
I have never lived out of the Country. I am fluent in Spanish from my mission in Wisconsin.
As far as living, we will be in either Santo Domingo or La Romana.
I am just curious for those who have lived, visited, or travelled there, any good tips?
We aren't supposed to eat any "Street Food" as it may not be safe. We are not allowed to drink/use any water unless it is bottled (drinking, brushing teeth, etc). We are also not supposed to eat any vegetables that could have been washed by their tap water.
What do you suggest to do for food, as we will be responsible for providing our own food for ourselves.
Should I be worried about the different diseases from Mosquitoes? (Zika, Dengue, Malaria, etc). Best Mosquito repellant?
Our most likely mode of transportation will be the buses. Any advice there?
Lastly, we will be able to travel on the weekends throughout the island. Any awesome places that are a must-visit?
Thank you in advance!
