Ladies, hold your head up high....

You had a great season and to be in the NCAA with a young team (only 1 SR) that is quite impressive. 1st 2 quarters, right there in the thick of it all. Good to great teams come back and that is what Stanford did. Gonzales, 2nd FR in the nation in terms of scoring, that is a blessing to BYU. Without question, she doesn't play like a FR. Gonzales has very good bball IQ. Looking ahead to the 2019 Bball season, here are few things I would focus on in the off season:

1. Ladies need to have a stronger upper body. Stanford was able to muscle bodies and it showed later in the game, especially in the 3rd quarter. I suggest medicine balls to pass, increasing forearm and shoulders.

2. Ladies need to work on being more aggressive in the paint, so the 4 and 5 spot, you have to own the low blocks. With increased upper body strength, this can be achieved and with quicker feet, defense will foul all the time, giving bigs more scoring opportunities.

3. Ladies need to work on quickness, not necessarily speed, but be more quick on weak side defense AND more importantly understand angles. There are quickness drills that really help in this area.

4. 1, 2 and 3 spot, IF you are in a pick and roll, and you have a height advantage, take it. So pass it off quickly. Don't wait for defensive recovery, which Stanford adjusted nicely in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Stanford negated that to happen by playing aggressive defense, it showed. Stanford adjusted to BYU pick and roll by playing solid defense.

5. 1, 2 and 3 spot....When you have the ball, don't swing low while your defender is in your grill. Keep at chest height and work your triple threat...don't pick up the dribble too early. This goes to understanding basketball and spacing.

6. Conditioning...4 and 5 spot really need assistance in this area. 1, 2 and 3 spot are ready to run, but when your big bodies are slower, that really goes against your offensive flow, especially if your outside shot isn't dropping. This offense relies on 1,2 and 3 spot being aggressive offensively, but without any rebound support, you have to be hitting your shots. Bigs, when rebounding bring to chest, not lower...you are allowing quicker guards to easily strip and cause turn over situations. Avoid this at all cost and pass out with authority, this goes with increasing upper body strenght.

7. Defense with FEET, not hands. There was a play where Gonzales was in perfect position, moving her feet and her arms were clean, or away from any hand check. Ref blew his whistle and called body. Offensive player body didn't adjust or move from Gonzales defense, it was a bad call and solid defense. That is the concept of playing with clean hands and quick feet. 4 and 5 spot can do drills to increase this, by using a 3 ft rope tied to feet and your mind is telling your feet to move, negating a blocking situation.

These ladies played a fantastic season and earned the right to represent. Off season starts now ladies, okay maybe next week, but I really like this young team. They do need to be stronger and increase quickness. Gonzales when it is all said and done, will leave BYU as an All American, she has very good bball IQ, sees the court very well. 4 and 5 spot, work on correct pivot and using the backboard when close to the basket. Great upside.

Zags have to consider BYU as one of the teams to beat in 2019. Great job ladies, now the men need to rise up and represent.
