Jay Drew discusses it in the article below from 2015. I remember thinking that yes, Neilson didn’t seem to like to bang in the post a ton, but that compared to the talent in the program, having a 6’10” guy who was reasonably coordinated and had a decent offensive game was an asset worth keeping. Plus he seemed like a good kid and that there was room to develop. Given the fact that Rose always kept 3 or 4 guys on the roster who looked like they could barely play basketball, actively pushing a guy like Neilson out seemed odd to me. There must be more to the story.
No matter how you slice it, the quantity of players that left the program during Rose’s last few years was troubling, including those who left early to go play in obscure int’l leagues rather than complete a great career at BYU. Will be interesting to see how this plays out during Pope’s time as HC.
