IIRC he said that he didn't' mean to discount great Xs and Os guys, but he felt that BYU needed a great recruiting who can get and keep the pipeline full of top-notch players. I happen to agree with this. Great recruiting makes up for a lot of problems. Pope is very well versed in the art and science of recruiting AND he's seems to be a great teacher AND a good Xs and Os guy. I am very sure BYU got who they were gunning for. They are probably disappointed they couldn't get Madsen as an Asst coach, but I doubt he was their top choice for HC.
