Interesting assumption. I think it was Mark Durrant's interview on SN when he
was asked about the keys variables for a great coaching hire and he responded that it is all about recruiting. IIRC he said that he didn't' mean to discount great Xs and Os guys, but he felt that BYU needed a great recruiting who can get and keep the pipeline full of top-notch players. I happen to agree with this. Great recruiting makes up for a lot of problems. Pope is very well versed in the art and science of recruiting AND he's seems to be a great teacher AND a good Xs and Os guy. I am very sure BYU got who they were gunning for. They are probably disappointed they couldn't get Madsen as an Asst coach, but I doubt he was their top choice for HC.
