I've been watching the old Bond movies. Of course I don't expect the special effects to be up to today's standards, but it was funny how funny some of them were. I don't know how they looked to an audience in the 60s, but they were hilarious to me. I can imagine people being interested in how they accomplished the effects, but not really being "fooled" by them. Of course, I remember how awesome the CGI was when I first saw the Lord of the Rings movies, but watching them now, they seem dated.
I think my favorite effect is when they wanted to convey speed, they would just speed up the tape. Need footage of Bond driving real fast? Speed up the tape. Need footage of really fast skiing? Speed up the tape.
