The issue is that BYU could put together a schedule like this:
vs. Rutgers
vs. Illinois
vs. Purdue
vs. Indiana
vs. Northwestern
vs. Maryland
with some non-conference games against:
Kansas
Oregon State
Colorado
Wake Forest
We would go 10-0 against that schedule - against all P5 teams. Sprinkle in a top team or two and we'd still have a decent ranking and make it to a NY6 bowl.
All of these teams are rated worse than BYU on the 5-year S&P+ rankings in the same time period that was used in the FBSchedules article
