Even back in the late 70's locals
around Waipio were commenting about tourists. Some wise locals said, because they are here, you have food on your table. They would then make it an effort to educate the drivers going down to wait for drivers coming up. Great hidden gem that locals would swim in. Tourists tried, but they freaked out. Unlike say Pounders or Waimea beach, Waipio north and south beach (separated by the river) has a more drastic drop off, being closer to the Kohala mountain range.
