The debate with my wife was much more heated about how much I should carry
My wife wanted me to carry a whole lot more insurance on me than I thought was necessary. Only had a couple of kids at the time, rented a small house, some grad school debt. I made the mistake of calling my dad for his advice.

He essentially said: "You don't need nearly as much as either of you think. Cover your funeral, school loans, and a year or two of costs. By then, your wife will find someone else to marry and it becomes his cost after that to take care of her and the kids."

She wasn't amused. I lost the debate after that.
