Anybody else watch that netflix doc on the Portland Mavericks baseball

team in the mid 70's? Worth a watch. I rarely watch anything but that looked interesting. Kurt Russell's Dad, started an independent rookie league team after the Portland Beavers triple A bolted for Spokane in '72. Bing Russell was the sheriff on Gunsmoke and a TV actor for many years. Kurt actually played for the Mavericks. A bunch of washed up mid 30's guys with long hair beating up on these MLB rookie league teams.

It reminded me of my youth when the Gulls bolted SLC and we got the Independent Trappers. I felt cheated I lost a triple-a team for those formidable years. But now I have a new appreciation for having an Independent club back then and the antics that ensued. I was there when the Trappers won 29 straight games to set the pro sports record of the time. Sold out, standing room only, and people were hanging on trees and out of windows and on top of nearby buildings trying to catch a glimpse of the last pitch, which was a strike out. Beer was flying everywhere and fans were lighting cigars, players were climbing up into the seats to celebrate and get a cigar. Yeah, it was rookie league team, but there were 15,000 people in and around Derk's field that night like it was the Yankees in town. Different era.
