athleticism over skill.
The author chose Curry, but one even said he might take Curry out so they could switch every screen (which is true). Yet Steph Curry is the reason the Warriors are good. Durant goes down and they look every bit as good if not better. Oh by the way they won a title with Curry while Durant couldn't get it done with uber athlete Russell Westbrook in his prime.
If we were building a top all-time team would we include Larry Bird? Larry was athletic, but not Lebron James athletic. Larry also dominated basketball before his back injury.
Would we include Tim Duncan? Tim wasn't a leaper. Tim wasn't particularly quick. All Tim did was win 5 titles (and give us the Timmy face) while not being the flashiest of players. Tim dominated the basketball game on both ends of the floor like few before him.
Would we include John Stockton? I never have. Yet he has multiple all-time records in the sport. Now some of that was longevity, but most of that was just great basketball for a long time.
Being bigger, stronger and faster is ideal in the NBA and any sport. But we have seen multiple examples of circumstances where guys have dominated without this trait.
I am not saying anyone's starting 5 is wrong. I just find it interesting the biases we innately have. As most know I am a Nuggets fan and until you watch Nikola Jokic play I could see how he would be easily dismissible. A 7 foot white center who can't jump. He just happens to be a guy who beats you with skill instead of athleticism. He lasted until 41 in a draft where Superhuman athlete Andrew Wiggins went first.
The NBA is littered with these guys.
