Is maximizing the number of years lived one of the most important things?
I started thinking about this issue with the news of the guy from Utah that died descending from the summit of Everest. For example, if an omniscient being told me I'd live ten years longer if I gave up eating red meat altogether, I might well do the math and decide to keep eating red meat. If I died at 70 and ate steak and other red meat along the way I might be happier than if I died at 80 and went three plus decades without the red meat.

I'm not THAT into meat. It was just a simple example that came to mind.

If all your kids are grown and out of the house, is it really that bad of an idea to take some risks doing something you love?

I have no desire to do risky hikes, let alone climb Mt. Everest. But if there were something else I really loved that was risky, I might well be inclined to do it after my kids are grown and gone.
