Didn’t “have to”, wanted to...
Because the description is important to the point. Having a large home and large property has been great while raising a family. Both large enough that we could all find privacy and quiet even when things were going in that weren’t quiet which was quite often with my kids and their friends.

We liked that our kids friends hung out at our house, although that did make for more maintenance and expenses but it was worth it.

If a persons only goal is to just get to retirement then I think Baron is correct, it is expensive to have a large house and yard, at least if you maintain it properly and want it to look good. It is an expense that would delay retirement for the majority of people somif that’s your goal then smaller is better. But smaller isn’t better in all ways, and bigger is better in a lot of ways.

We all make tradeoffs in life based on the lifestyles we want to live and what is worth it to one may not be to another.
