I don't live in Kyoto but was just there for a couple of days with wife and kids. There are a lot of cool temples and shrines, if you are into that kind of thing. Most of the more meaningful shrines and temples are in very beautiful surroundings. My favorite was Kinkaku-Ji Temple with the gold leaf pagoda. The pagoda reflects in the pond with a beautiful wooded hill back drop.

Other temples and shrines are great as well. We did carousel sushi which was fun.

Really can't go wrong with whatever you do. We loved Kyoto.
