Interesting decision that Kevin Durant has in front of him
He has 3 options from what I can tell.

1. Opt out and go somewhere else
2. Sign a long term extension with Golden State
3. Opt in for his last year and then be a free agent next year

I have heard some talking heads on the radio say that he needs to opt in because no one will want to sign him to a MAX deal. To me that is asinine. I think just about any team in the league would still jump at the opportunity to get a top 3 player in the NBA even if he had to sit out a year and even if there is some doubt that he will ever truly regain form.

So what does he do? The general consensus seems to be that he will opt in for the additional year in Golden State. If it were me, I would cash in when I could on another huge payday.

While I think just about any GM would take the risk on Kevin today, the one time they might be hesitant to take that risk would be after a less than successful return.

Achilles is a tricky one. Dominique Wilkins had an Achilles tear and played out of his mind after it at ages 33 and 34. Other guys like Wes Matthews seem to never regain form their pre-injury form. It seemingly killed the careers of Chauncey Billups and Kobe Bryant who never played a lot of games after the injury, although both were older and you wonder if that was just a natural decline.

In the NFL the Bronco's Emmanuel Sanders is seen running routes and sprinting just 6 months after his tear. He is expected to be 100% by training camp a mere 8 months after tearing his Achilles. Brandon Stokley tore his Achilles at age 30 and came back to have some of the most productive years of his career.

Anyway, if I were Durant I would get paid this summer "just in case" he is a guy who has a harder time coming back from an Achilles. That means I would go full force ahead on whatever his plan was before the injury. We'll see if Kevin agrees.
