CONMEBOL is staging it again next year to get on an even-year cadence, so there was an opportunity for the US to play in it soon, even though they missed this year’s tournament. I was expecting the US and especially Mexico to play it in 2020, so I was very surprised to read today that Australia and Qatar (again!) were invited instead.

I understand what happened in 2019, with the Gold Cup conflict (although if I were running the show, I would have sent a US team anyway, and sent a B-team to the Gold Cup). But I don’t know what happened for the 2020 tournament. At one point there was even serious talk of the US hosting the 2020 tournament. Is CONMEBOL still mad at the US and Mexico for the 2019 snub? Or is it something else?
