My observations from the US Open yesterday and my celebrity run in
First off, I’m not a golfer, so my takes are from that lens.

I’ve only been to one other PGA event, and that was a smaller tournament with not as many big names.

My buddies and I set up at the 6th green grandstand for the first half of the day. People got rowdier than I expected at a golf tournament. There were a few times the marshals had to reign people in, but for the most part it was all good. One of my buddies started a pool where we’d each put in a dollar and pick a player in each 3some that came through. Ball closest to the hole won, but the player had to sink the put, or else the pot pushed to the next 3some. Before we knew it, guys around us were wanting in and we eventual had 15 people throwing money in each 3 some. It was hilarious and made things much more interesting.

My observation on players:

Tiger is boring. No interaction with the fans and he stiff and quiet. I get he’s one of the greatest, but not very fun.

Mickelson was by far the coolest player and had the most interaction with the crowds. We got up to the ropes at 15 right next to the tee box and it was really cool seeing him up close and get some good video. People were making hilarious comments about his calves and he was eating it up. Man that guy has a powerful swing.

Most interesting experience of the day was at the end of the day on 18. We were walking the border of the fairway and Dustin Johnson hit a shot that went over the ropes and landed on the asphalt path about 100 feet in front of me. Everyone immediately went running up to see the ball and circle around it. The marshals pushed everyone back so DJ could come up to hit it. My buddy was right at the front and was standing about 5 feet behind him and got a great video of him hitting the ball.

However, I pushed through the crowd to get further down and watch his shot from a little further back. There are some really nice houses there bordering the 18th fairway, and as I was pushing through the crowd along the edge of one of the yards, I hit someone’s shoulder and looked up to apologize. It was Joe Montana.

I was shocked and wanted to say something but he just kept walking along the edge to get somewhere and I had to keep walking with the crowd.

Anyway, overall, long day with a lot of walking, but fun to say I did it. Not sure I’d do it again, not really my thing, but it was fun.
