A couple issues with your analysis
Where was Lavell early in his tenure? Lavell started out 25-19-1 (.555 win%) against a cakewalk schedule. Lavell didn't win his first bowl game until his 9th season. Granted, Lavell started out with a program that hadn't been elevated.

Bronco had the benefit of an offense that was almost fully set up with young experienced talent (John Beck, Curtis Brown, Jonny Harline, Dennis Pitta, Andrew George, Austin Collie, a full offensive line, etc.) Bronco doesn't make his best run without that all-oop by previous coaching staffs.

In contrast, who did Sitake inherit after his first season on offense? Bushman and a couple offensive line pieces? The cupboard needed to almost be completely restocked. Sitake went out and got Wilson, Katoa, Pau'u, Empey, Hoge, etc.

The point it is almost apples and oranges, the programs Bronco, Sitake, and Lavell inherited. Sitake and the previous offensive coaching staff does bear a lot of the blame for the 2017 disaster, but it's not as if the offense was a juggernaut waiting to happen even without all the injuries.

Lastly, there are only 5 options (Reid, Leach, Whittingham, Ken N., and Bronco) for coaches with FBS head coaching experience that have a head coaching track record. BYU is unwilling to afford any of them. If you put Sitake in with the available coaching pool that BYU can actually afford, BYU might just choose the guy who handpicked 80% of the current players and who 3 years head coaching experience at BYU.
