Put me firmly in the camp that believes Kalani needs to earn an extension by having a good season. I think the floor for such a season would be 7 twins mainly because the schedule is tough. If he gets to 7 wins then you give Kalani an extension.
As one who was calling for kalani's termination after 2017, I give him a lot of credit for the way he got things turned around last season. And as far as I can tell from what I'm heeing from inside sources that the discipline and culture shift is still in place. Also someone said it was kalani's fault that he allowed Tom to dictate some of the coaches who were going to be hired with him, namely Ty Detmer. It is very possible that that was an initial condition of Kalani being hired. I ask you, if you are offered your dream job with that condition would you be able to turn it down? This does not absolve coach sitake of the 2017 disaster, but it was a factor. I do believe there are other factors, but it looks to me like many of those factors were rectified.
I know for a fact, for instance, that the team is working hard this of fseason and there is buy-in from everyone in knowing what they need to do to take the next step.
Criddle said something a while back on one of his shows that really struck. And that is that the learning curve at BYU for a coach is very very different then at any other school. I don't think that this can be understated. And things have changed drastically from when even bronco mendenhall was hired and especially from one Lavell was here.
I believe the Kalani has also learned from his mistakes and with the help of Jeff Grimes, has instilled into the program more discipline, accountability and buy-in. One thing that cannot be understated is the greater difficulty associated with these tober schedules has put a greater premium on wins. And it's not just scheduling four or five quality p5 teams every year. Many of these so-called g5 teams are good teams. Utah state has a program that's on the rise right now and that is no longer g gimmie. Boise State is one of the top teams in g5.
In all honesty, when the season began last year, I did not believe that BYU would be able to win even six games. But they did,. And they did so while breaking in a new offensive coordinator and essentially revamping the entire offense Midway through the season to accommodate the different skill-set that Zach Wilson had. Doing something like that and having success is no small feat.
Having said all this, do I think that Kalani sitake should get an extension right now? No. He still has two show that the program is headed in the right direction. But, I will make this prediction. If BYU goes 2-2 or better in their first four games which on paper is the toughest early season schedule in BYU history, I believe kehlani then deserves a contract extension. And to say Kalani sitake did not make improvements last year and earned the chance to prove himself once again are being far too critical. And I am one who does believe that 2 - 2 is a possibility
