My 5-year-old son said something during the NBA playoffs that really shocked me.
At one point during a game, he said something to the effect of "We hate black guys, don't we dad?" I was shocked and appalled. I instantly began mental preparation for a serious conversation and I was wondering where this attitude could have come from.

I then realized what he really meant. My son doesn't really know teams at this point (except BYU, of course). So he always asks me for whom I'm rooting, and then he proceeds to root with exaggerated passion for that team as if he is the most dyed-in-the-wool fan out there. In that series I was rooting for Toronto. He sees things as very black and white, and since I was rooting for the Raptors, they were the "good guys," thus making the Warriors the "bad guys." In that game, the Warriors were wearing their black jerseys, and so he referred to them as the "black guys."

Going forward I tried to get him to call them the Warriors, so as to avoid confusion. And I was very relieved that my son isn't a racist.
