Wild and crazy idea for a new conference
Don;t worry about picking holes in this idea, just a crazy thought about trying to make not only BYU, but a bunch of other G5 schools relevant and giving them something to play for in this college football world. Maybe the P5 would be willing to go to an 8 team playoff and include the winner of this 24 team conference and maybe some network would love all the available content.
Maybe even fans would show up to these teams games because they actually have something to play for.
Every team would play 12 games, semi finalists would play 13 plus bowl, finalists would play 14 plus a bowl and champion would play 14 plus playoff game. If they happened to make it to the playoff final, they would play 16 games, tough but doable.
The National Conference
Eastern: UCF Temple Cincinnati USF E. Carolina Army Navy Memphis
Central: Houston Tulsa SMU Tulane S. Miss AFA CSU Wyoming
Western: SDSU Hawaii Fresno St BYU BSU USU Nevada UNLV
Teams schedule 7 conference games and 4 non-conference games.
Game 12 is the last weekend of the season and goes as follows:
Each division winner and the highest ranked remaining team play in a semi game as their game 12.
The other teams are matched up by ranking in hopes of increasing their SOS and creating opportunities for those teams to gain access to better bowls.
The semifinal winners play for the conference championship 2 weeks later and the winner gains access to the expanded college 8 team playoff.
The conference aligns with bowls within its footprint to ensure the conference is well represented. 12 bowls are allotted to the conference with matchups determined by ranking only, not by how well they travel. The top 8 bowls are connected to P5 and the bottom 4 bowls are connected to anyone else.
Bowls in these cities: Orlando, Memphis, Houston, New Orleans, San Diego, Las Vegas (2 games), Hawaii, Phoenix, Miami, Dallas, Tucson.
The entire season then becomes an exercise in earning your playoff position and bowl position. If you don't earn it, you don't go.
Crazy and will never happen, but what the heck, it can't be any worse then what we have!
