Is it me or have famous scenic places become exponentially
more crowded recently (particularly over the past decade or so)?

The three most popular Utah national parks (Zion, Bryce, and Arches) are good examples of this. I love those parks. But they have almost become ruined with overcrowding.

We were just in the Canadian Rockies and Banff and Lake Louise were absolutely slammed (granted, it was a holiday week for both Canada and the U.S. but it was like Disneyland up there).

And even backcountry areas are becoming increasingly crowded. For example, you now have to win a lottery to hike the John Muir Trail in the Sierras or the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainier (I remember when you could just walk up and get a permit to hike these).

When we were at Lake Louise, we decided to go to Moraine Lake, which is an even more scenic lake about 10 miles away. We were told that the road to that lake was closed to private vehicles due to overcrowding and that we would have to take a shuttle bus to see it. So we waited in a line for 90 minutes to buy tickets to ride the bus then waited for another hour before actually boarding the bus. When we finally arrived at the lake, one of the park rangers told us that they only started closing the road a couple of years ago. Her theory was that people posting pictures on social media has been a major driver in the exponential rise in crowds at these types of places over the past few years.
