Yeah, I’m optimistic still, but the O staff doesn’t deserve a pass
The truth is that other than Robert Anae, who was consistently competent, sometimes excellent, sometimes too vanilla/stubborn/predictable, we’ve been lousy more often than we’ve even been good in terms of our offensive staff, their play calls, key decisions, etc.

This dates all the way back to Norm Chow. I think it’s a simple as BYU is a hard place to coach, great O Coordinators are hard to find, and you get what you pay for.

That said, I think we’ve got potential to become a pretty solid if not spectacular with Grimes and Roderick. Grimes was unequivocally one of the very best offensive position coaches in the country and Roderick at least has high-level experience, something we typically are not able to hire much of it at BYU. With the exception of Gary Crowton, our O Coordinators tend to at least get a bit better with a little more seasoning. I expect that will be the case with Grimes who basically returns his full complement of players this year from last year.
