I was 11 when I went with my dad and the older scouts to Mexican Hat and went down the San Juan for 5
days.
It rained, and rained. And the floodwaters came up. The area was on the news. It was record high water.
It ended up being THE BEST scout trip of all time.
Later, when I was older, the same leader took us to Desolation Canyon across the Green for another 5 days.
River running is the best.

Exactly this. The boats they made were a really cool project on their own, but for paddling around on a stillwater
