RE: Readers digest version of why your brother went to the dark side?
He probably would deny this reason now, but years ago I think he started cheering for the U as a way to stop coming to church. Where we grew up, all the inactive and non-LDS cheered for the U. I even had a non-LDS friend move in from out of state and he loved BYU until someone told him he couldn’t cheer for them because he wasn’t active LDS. Pretty lame but pretty true.
