I know a guy in AA who got his 50 year chip a couple of summers ago. He still calls himself an alcoholic. He knows that, even though he's been sober for 50+ years now, it just takes one small slip to be right back in it. He stays away from cologne and aftershave and sugar alcohols just to avoid that potential thought or reaction or whatever that might lead him back to where he was 5 decades ago.
