My family is big, it works fine. Once again, it's about developing habits.

Changing habits is hard the first few times but it's really not a problem once you change your habits. We've been living abroad, and just bring extra shopping bags folded up inside one bag that we carry in with us. If we go to something like Costco anyway they don't use bags, and you use boxes.
