Because it gives him and his attorney time to get the police reports and work
out a deal with the prosecutor. If you just go in there and plead guilty to what you were charged with, the judge has no choice but to proceed with sentencing.
My bet is that they reduce it to an impaired driving and he pleads guilty at the next hearing.
