for not joining a BCS/P5 conference. To get out of many of their schedules games, BYU would be paying penalties. We’ve seen that contract language.
In addition, the AAC would probably want BYU to sign some contract penalizing them if they bolt to another league. BYU’s goal is a P5 league around 2024 when the rumors of the next wave of shuffling will happen. That’s why you don’t see BYU have more than like 3-4 games scheduled beyond 2024ish.
Even if BYU could make more TV revenue by joining the AAC, they have to consider their current contracted games with their associated penalties. They also know they could probably join the AAC in 5 years if they need to.
Also, I didn’t even mention travel expenses. The AAC teams are not that close in proximity. Independence is not easy on travel either, but it seems like BYU currently plays a lot of teams in the west....Utah, USU, BSU, PAC-12 teams, occasionally MWC teams, etc.
