Pony Zale Walk-on
I followed Duval at the Bob Hope in 1999

Unfortunately, it was on Friday. He shot 59 on Sunday, finishing the round off with an eagle to win the tournament. On the day I saw him, he was laser straight and accurate. I have never seen a ball flight like his on the tour. Most guys hit a fade or draw. I would stand behind every Duval shot I could and it didn't move a foot off line. It was like he was playing Wii Sports Golf and every strike of the ball was perfect. He had a beautiful, flowing and powerful swing, especially with long irons. La Quinta is an easy course, but his ball control was so good, he made par 3s look like he was playing par 2s. After that tournament, I think he had won something like 10 of the previous 30 tournaments he had entered. He reached #1 over Tiger. Duval would go on to win the Open that year — his only major — and his game immediately dropped into a death spiral. One of the more unexpected and disappointing careers in sports.
