There are clear lines between a lot of "classic" 80s movies that are actually
good versus those that are mediocre but cultural touchstones and/or those toward which people ironically claim an undying affection, despite actually being terrible. In some cases, there are a couple classic scenes that everyone remembers while forgetting how boring the rest of the movie is (e.g. American Werewolf in London, various Arnold actioners, etc.).

Ferris Bueller - Overrated
Back to the Future - Great
Fast Times - Mediocre
Ghostbusters - Great
E.T. - Well made but boring
Goonies - Still fun
Raiders - Great
Top Gun - Ludicrous
Die Hard - Great, but the ironic "greatest Christmas move evar!!!" nonsense is awful
Empire Strikes Back - Great
Karate Kid - Awful
The Thing - Great
Aliens - Great
Blade Runner - So boring
Princess Bride — Still tons of fun
Trading Places - Boring
Footloose - LOL, terrible
Raising Arizona - Great
Caddyshack - Hugely overrated
Bill and Ted - Still fun
etc.
