I've shared this story before, and it seems appropriate here
Many years ago at my work we had a group of designers that were contracted with our team (so not full employees). One of those designers (I'll call him Bob) was big into an MLM with his wife, and I assume he wasn't making great money in his real job with us. So, apparently his upline convinced him he needed to stage a "retirement" from his job with us, to let all of his downline know that he was so successful with the MLM he no longer needed to work. Of course, as you know, the pretense of success will convince people they can make it to pretended success as well.

They invited all of Bob's downline to come to our building. They had a bunch of balloons to let go. At the proscribed time, Bob informed all of us that he was retiring, and he took the elevator down to the lobby for his triumphal exit into retirement bliss. His upline showed up in a red ferrari with the top down (which I later heard was rented). He picked Bob up to the cheers of the gathered crowd, they launched the balloons into the sky, and Bob rode off into the afternoon of retirement at the young age of 28 or so, never having to work again.

Well, that was the lie, anyway. The MLM wasn't doing that much for him really, and the lie didn't convince anybody from what I heard. A few months later Bob was back at another real job in another state, because they had lost their home in our area.
