A few mentions from some of their articles on realignment — not a full endorsement, but more positive casual comparisons than some have offered:
Football is the square peg in the round hole. Independence — the apparent plan, for now — does not appear to be viable without the religious or military following of Notre Dame, BYU or Army.
With UConn’s football future up in the air following its pending departure from the American for the football-free Big East, independence may be the answer by default. If it happens, the Huskies can look at the landscape now to figure out what to expect. Their experience would be comparable to programs like UMass and New Mexico State rather than Notre Dame and BYU.
. . .
For some places, independence fits. Notre Dame’s history and national brand, BYU’s religious affiliation and Army’s military affiliation make it doable, though Navy opted for the American Athletic Conference beginning in 2015after more than 130 years as an independent, and Army was a football-only member of Conference USA from 1998 to 2005. Notre Dame, BYU and Army also have their own national television deals.
