Golden State killer. They found several 3rd cousins level DNA. Figured out who were common great (maybe another great),

Grandparents, then took the 1000 or so progenitors of those and eliminated those that didn’t fit profile like females, too old or too young, never lived in California, etc, and narrowed it down to just a few then started looking at them individually. Found one guy who was likely perp and obtained his DNA from a tissue in his garbage. Perfect match.
