Katy Perry hit with $2.8M judgment for copying the beat of a Christian rap song

These cases are always interesting to me and I tend to believe art should be allowed to be copied, added to, & improved upon.

The beats here are definitely similar, but when you have thousands of songs in existence it seems inevitable to have some overlap. Also not seeing how the rapper suffered any loss or harm even if Katy’s team outright copied his beat.

A jury said Katy Perry’s "Dark Horse" copied another song. The $2.8 million verdict is alarming.

Perry and collaborators now face the penalty phase of the trial to determine how much they owe.

Especially in this case. Music is finite, almost all music is derivative (especially pop music). I understand the beats
