It appears Yoel Childs didn't clearly know the rules and didn't break them knowingly. I feel like the NCAA didn't clearly explain the rules after changing them and paperwork errors cost BYU's best player 28% (9/32) of the season? Nine games is steep.

Yoeli Childs also knew there could be issues after this process and still decided to return to BYU. He could have easily left and gone pro and would have had zero issues with this. Yet he came back to BYU.
