I'm sure Tom can spin the "courtesy call" line a lot of ways, as in there was no formal offer, no formal sit-down meetings. But I stand by my source, who has no reason to make anything up. He's no longer with the TOR/RBOC, but he was in the mix with the Pac-12 regarding conference expansion at the time. I'm sure I can find out how the outreach happened and who the POC was for BYU. As I mentioned in my note to original post, Tom or whomever BYU's POC was, could've been engaged by one of their colleagues from a conference member school to gauge BYU interest. My source said every school wanted BYU with Utah. That doesn't mean they voted on it. It means he knew all the school reps and discussed options and what their preferences were. Once they learned about the two barriers, that was it.
